When Things Snowball
A single snowflake
floats innocently down
Joining others
to form a snowball
Now of sufficient heft
perfect to smite others
Flake upon flake
snowdrifts amass
Their collective weight
an avalanche making
Engulfing justice
in a furious blaze of white
But a single branch
of self-interest
Left
poking through

Four Dead In Ohio
Ohio
Lyrics by Patricia J. Griffin & Robert Plant
Performed by Neil Young
Tin soldiers and Nixon coming
We’re finally on our own
This summer I hear the drumming
Four dead in Ohio
Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been done long ago
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?
Tension was palpable on the campus of the
University of Missouri in the spring of 1970.
With Nixon’s decision on April 30th to invade
Cambodia, protests against the Vietnam War
accelerated nationwide.
The Kent State Massacre on May 4, 1970, in
which unarmed college students were fired
upon by the Ohio National Guard, killed four
students and wounded nine others.
Outrage reached a feverish pitch, in turn
sparking a nationwide student strike.
In an unprecedented move, the University of
Missouri cancelled final exams, sending
students home early and putting a lid on the
situation before heretofore peaceful demon-
strations could turn violent.
Graduation ceremonies, scheduled to be held in
the football stadium, were relocated due to rain.
Rather than sit in an auditorium and view the
ceremonies via closed-circuit TV, which seemed
anticlimactic, I returned my unused cap and gown
to the book store and headed on down the road
to begin the next chapter of my life.
4 Dead In O-HI-O

Finally…
On Monday, May 1, 2017, a total of 650 Vietnam
veterans from Nebraska boarded four jets as part
of an Honor Flight to Washington DC to tour the
nation’s war memorials and monuments.
Upon their return to the Lincoln airport that same
evening, they were greeted by thousands of waving
flags and wall to wall cheers.
This is in stark contrast to forty plus years ago, when
the majority of returning Vietnam veterans received
no welcome at all or jeers.
It’s about time.
Bull’s-Eye
Smack dab in the middle
Is my take on this riddle
Not so far left or right
No compromise is in sight
An orientation it seems
Where there is sore need
Pressing just for extremes
Cuts us off at the knees
Some flex it will take
To amend the mistakes
Is it finally the time
For a meeting of minds?

Trump Funk Blues
Election done
Chaos won
Reality dawns
Fantasy gone
Awe erased
Shock in place
Funk—Funk—Trump Funk
Nation united
Stands divided
Half elated
Half deflated
Emotion run rife
World pays the price
Facing our sentence
Four years penance
Funk—Funk—Trump Funk
Donald throned
Democrats moan
Rhetoric vile
Now fake smiles
Hillary concedes
Platitudes weaves
Obama genteel
Ire concealed
Funk—Funk—Trump Funk
Enough reeling
Time for healing
Through foul weather
Come together
End derision
Find clear vision
Create a new day
The American way
Ball in Trump’s court
Time clock starts
Remember our veterans today and thank them for their service!
Accountability
Taking responsibility used to be
A non-negotiable “given”,
Not some monumental accomplishment
Beyond our reach.Unfortunately, society has turned
Passing the buck and
Pointing the finger at the other guy
Into a true art form.Recognizing and fixing one’s foibles
Has become passé.Having a good life is something
We should all expect
To create for ourselves
Through individual initiative
And to retool as necessary
When things don’t go
According to plan.Blaming, suing,
Taking advantage of
Or harming others
To get what we think we deserve,
But perhaps have not yet earned,
Simply should be
Unacceptable.Inspired By Daily Prompt: Irksome
Mud Fest 2016
Considering the raucous tenor of
the 2016 Presidential campaign
and the first Presidential debate,
perhaps the traditional format
whereby candidates seek cover behind
their respective podiums and
sling rhetorical mud at each other,
should be modified accordingly. In that all borders of civility
have long ago been breached, it
might be more apropos to dispense
with the pomp and circumstance
and dive right into the slimy muck
head first, with a ‘get down and dirty’
mud wrestling match.I can see the headline now:
‘Don The Dominator vs Hil The Hellcat’The media would eat it up, providing
blow-by-blow coverage and 24/7 replays.Sponsors would scramble to get
a piece of the action. And, it would lend that reality show
flavor to the proceedings to which the
American public has become accustomed.Which would survive the fracas,
Donald’s hair or Hillary’s pantsuit?Whether you choose to tune in or tune out,
be sure to cast your vote come November!Inspired by Daily Prompt: Border

You can run but you can’t hide
With terrorist threats far and wideA night on the town, a trip to the mall
Who knows the next victims tragedy befallsFear is festering away inside
Slowly eating our souls aliveWith each attack humanity dims
Creating for youth a future grimHow much more blood must be shed
Before we purge the streets of red?The time has come to heed the call
Across all nations large and smallTo come together at last as one
Proclaiming no more violence be doneWithin lies love of such great power
All evil it can compel to cowerBut as for now we’re along for the ride
For you can run but you can’t hide
From hearts wherein hate still resides
