I love the headline, and what a fascinating photo. There must be a story behind it, and your poem is perfectly apt. Can’t help wondering about complementary scenarios such a family squabble or some such disagreement also souring the atmosphere. (Not liking the photographer is also an interesting suggestion!) Maybe they are all on diet and are conflicted now they are expected to eat cake? The photo would do well for one of those caption competitions, except that your poem already nails it perfectly.
That’s not necessarily true of birthdays though from the looks of the smirks on their faces it most certainly fit quite well

Thanks, Eliza. I thought I’d branch out and try writing in response to a provided image. I don’t think of myself as a writer of tales.

Nobody looks too happy in that photo. Or else they’re exhausted. Your poem fits well!

Not every one is blessed here. I think your poem talks truely about those unhappy souls.

Visceral, you tap that deep abiding unease of “what if?” Who cuts before blowing the candles out?

Thanks, Paul. I find that image bizarre and unsettling in so many ways….fitting for a writing prompt.

Great photo poem. There is a story behind that photo. Maybe no one liked the photographer. ๐ :0
