Decades of stars and sun I’ve seen
This is where I’ve always been
Battling wind and snow and ice
Time and again I’ve paid the price
My roots have firmly taken hold
I wish to stay here and grow old
Don’t make me go I love it here
To all of us this place is dear
So many of my friends have fallen
The Grim Reaper for me comes calling
Let me add another ring
Save me from the chain saw’s sting
If I could speak I’d be so bold
Proclaim my worth in ounces gold
Progress must happen I am told
Soon I’ll be felled for a new road
My fate is sealed that much is clear
Until that day I live in fear
I am a stately, regal tree
Don’t cut me down, just let me be
We need to hear the pleas of the ever benevolent trees, else life on Earth will soon be doomed. Well written!!

Thanks. When I heard several years back of the eventual widening of this road near us, I knew this tree…and many others would be casualties. The chain saws were humming in February.

Yes, I am a sap for trees of all sizes. (Bad pun intended…I couldn’t resist)

Great post! 🙂
So many people envy my sister-in-law and brother-in-law who have a huger than huge log house. It’s way bigger than they need. I pity them.

Thanks, Tom. In preparation for widening this road from 2 to 4 lanes many trees were cut and much of the habitat along a small slough was “sanitized”. I doubt we will be treated to meandering wild turkeys or the occasional appearance of deer much longer.
